About
The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport (HPERS) derived its name from the School of Physical Education during the Specialist Training College (STC) in 1958. It was to churn out specialist teachers in the field of Physical Education to support the teaching of the subject in schools. In 1992, the institution’s name (STC) changed to the University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW) under PNDC Law 322. Based on its new status, the Department of HPERS became an integral part of the Division of Science Education now, the Faculty of Science Education, which has other affiliates. The department used to run Certificate in Sports Coaching, Diploma in Physical Education and Post Diploma in Physical Education (PE) programmes. After three years, the department of HPERS introduced the Master of Philosophy in Physical Education programme (MPhil in PE), intending to augment its staff strength to meet the increasing needs of the University College status. It was the first postgraduate programme in UCEW, hence a pioneer programme of the School of Graduate Studies. The MPhil programme was established in collaboration with a State University of New York College at Brockport in the United States of America. Its main objective was to upgrade the teaching staff status in order to meet the recurring educational reforms in Ghana. Through this, the level of teaching staff improved and lifted the image of the department. In 2000, the department changed its Diploma programme in PE to Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Physical Education and that witnessed increased in enrollment of students.
Graduate from the Bachelor of Education (HPERS) soared and necessitated the need for another master’s programme in PE. In 2007, the first batch of postgraduate students was admitted to study a Master of Education in PE (M.Ed.). This supported to bridge the break in the MPhil programme after some time when it resurfaced in 2009. Currently, the Department runs programmes in Bachelor of Science (Physical Education) and Sport Coaching and Diploma in Sport Coaching alongside its masters’ programmes both regular and sandwich.
