Abstract

Using French as the main communication tool in didactical interactions is challenging to learners
of French as a foreign language. The effect of this is the assertion that French language is
difficult to learn. The purpose of this study is to analyse some of the difficulties encountered by
students of Mount Mary College of Education, Somanya, Ghana in their attempt to communicate
orally in French during lessons. The study will permit us to suggest measures to improve upon
their effectiveness in using French as a communication tool in teaching and learning. The study
is conducted with a total number of 85 students in the third year and 8 teachers of the French
Department of Mount Mary College of Education, Somanya. Questionnaire administered to
teachers as well as recorded lessons were the research tools used in collecting data. The data
collected is analyzed by examining the length of discourses, pronunciation, repetitions, silence
and linguistic errors among others. The major findings of the study are that learners, often
abandon their discourses, omit words, borrow English expressions and make a lot of grammatical
errors. The causes of these difficulties are diagnosed to be, lack of vocabulary, poor application
of morphosyntactic rules; negative transfer of English expressions to French, poor learning
strategies among others.
