UEW Committed to Enhancing Support Services for Students – Vice-Chancellor
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Stephen Jobson Mitchual, has announced a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing support services and embracing technological advancements to foster academic excellence and meet the evolving needs of its student body.
He was speaking during the matriculation ceremony for fresh distance education students for the 2023/2024 academic year, held on Saturday, 13th April, 2024, at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus, Winneba.
Prof. Mitchual outlined UEW's dedication to providing quality education while ensuring students are equipped for the challenges of today's world. A notable stride in this pursuit is the establishment of a new study centre at the Ajumako campus, within the College of Ghanaian Languages, Ajumako. This expansion, which brings the total count of study centres to 45, underscores UEW's commitment to extending educational opportunities across Ghana. Prof. Mitchual emphasised that this initiative aims to cater to diverse educational needs, fostering an environment conducive to flexible learning and academic growth.
“Today marks a significant event as we matriculate the inaugural cohort of students enrolled in our undergraduate distance education programmes at the newly opened centre. It is imperative to recognise that the establishment of these centres not only serves to expand our educational footprint but also underscores our dedication to ensuring effective governance within the university system,” he affirmed.
Moreover, UEW is making significant technological advancements through the College for Distance and e-Learning (CODeL). The migration of student records onto the Online Student Information System (OSIS) platform ensures easy access to academic records anytime, anywhere.
Additionally, the transition from conventional paper-based course materials to an interactive online distribution method is underway, facilitated by the Learning Management System (LMS). This platform offers tailored study resources, virtual classrooms, and personalised learning experiences, empowering students to engage with their education in a dynamic digital environment.
The Vice-Chancellor urged matriculants to embrace digital literacy and leverage technology to excel in their academic pursuits, highlighting the importance of acquiring digital skills in today's interconnected world.
In response to UEW's initiatives, a significant number of students have been admitted for the 2023/2024 academic year, with 9,377 students registering for various diploma, bachelor’s, and postgraduate programmes out of 10,696 admitted applicants. This demonstrates the growing demand for quality education and the university's commitment to meeting this demand while embracing innovation and inclusivity.
With these advancements, the University of Education, Winneba, is poised to continue its legacy of excellence, equipping students with the tools and support they need to thrive in an ever-changing educational landscape.
