FABSE-UEW Inaugural Conference Explores Transformative Academic Writing Practices

The Faculty of Applied Behavioural Sciences in Education (FABSE) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has recently marked a significant milestone with its inaugural conference, themed "Transformative Academic Writing Practices in Education: Navigating Challenges and Embracing Opportunities".

The conference convened faculty members and students for an enlightening exploration of academic writing techniques and strategies at the Students Centre Seminar Room III, North Campus, Winneba, on Thursday, May 9, 2024.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles K. Assuah, Dean of the Centre for International Programmes, underscored the critical importance of equipping members of the university with proficient written communication skills. Emphasising the challenges often associated with the community with academic writing, Prof. Assuah encouraged attendees to actively engage in conferences, both locally and internationally, and to dedicate themselves to honing their writing abilities.

Mrs. Christina Ammah, Dean of FABSE, hosted the conference with the aim of empowering participants to navigate the intricacies of academic writing, overcome research obstacles, and translate concepts into actionable initiatives. Mrs. Ammah urged attendees to collaborate and explore how academic writing could disrupt traditional norms and shape new narratives in education.

A highlight of the conference was a presentation by Prof. Rowena Murray, Associate Dean at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, delivered via Zoom. Titled "Innovative Thesis Writing," Prof. Murray's presentation introduced attendees to cutting-edge thesis writing techniques and emphasised the importance of writer's groups and writing retreats. Participants engaged with Prof. Murray, seeking clarification on various aspects of her presentation, and contributing their insights.

Following Prof. Murray's presentation, the conference transitioned into focus group discussions, providing participants with an opportunity to delve deeper into key issues surrounding academic writing. Attendees were divided into groups, facilitating vibrant discussions, and enabling the sharing of diverse perspectives and experiences.

The conference concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and commitment among participants to embrace transformative academic writing practices.
