UEW-DGE Strengthens Ties with EU Delegation in Ghana
A delegation from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW)’s Department of Geography Education has paid a courtesy call on the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Ghana, His Excellency Irchad Razaaly, at the Round House, EU’s headquarters in Cantonments, Accra.
This courtesy call underscores UEW’s commitment to fostering international partnerships that enrich the academic experience and expand opportunities for its students and faculty.
The delegation led by Prof. Adjoa Afriyie Poku, Head of the Department of Geography Education, included prominent faculty members: Prof. Enoch Sam, Head of the Centre for School and Community Science and Technology Studies (SACOST); Dr. Kojo Gyabaah, Examination Officer of the Faculty of Social Sciences; and Dr. Felix Kwabena Donkor.
The UEW team expressed gratitude for the ambassador’s involvement as the guest speaker during this year’s Geography Students Association (GEOSA) Week, during which he shared valuable insights on global geography, sustainable development, and the role of youth in governance. A citation of appreciation was presented to Ambassador Razaaly, marking the EU’s instrumental support for the department and its initiatives.
“Ambassador Razaaly’s participation in GEOSA Week has left a lasting impact on our students and strengthened the connection between classroom learning and global affairs,” said Prof. Poku. “This visit reaffirms our department’s vision of preparing globally aware graduates who can apply geographic knowledge to societal needs.”
Discussions during the meeting centered on expanding the EU-UEW collaboration. With Ghana’s 2024 elections approaching, the conference also highlighted the potential role of universities and young people in promoting democratic values and civic engagement. Ambassador Razaaly acknowledged the vital role institutions like UEW play in equipping youth to be informed and active participants in Ghana’s democracy, expressing optimism about the continued partnership with the Geography Education Department.
The meeting culminated in a mutual commitment to advancing projects that benefit UEW’s student body and contribute to national development goals. The Geography Department’s ongoing engagement with the EU’s ambassador to Ghana positions UEW as a leader in international academic collaboration, demonstrating its dedication to preparing future leaders and innovators.
A citation of appreciation was presented to the ambassador for supporting the department’s activities. The ambassador and his team expressed gratitude for the gesture and his desire for the relationship to grow.
