The Head, Department of Food and Nutrition Education, Mr. Guy Eshun, in his welcome address, reinforced the practical-oriented programmes by the Faculty to offer students the opportunity to be equipped with skills for entrepreneurship.

“Our task is to provide step-by-step assistance to individuals who enroll as students to make them professionals at the time of their graduation,” he said.

He projected, “the theme for this exhibition is ‘acquisition of sugarcraft skills for entrepreneurial empowerment. The COVID-19 pandemichas affected economic activities globally and we believe that our programmes will readily provide employment avenues for our students on passing out, thereby reducing the unemployment burden on the state”.

Course Lecturer, Ms. Janet Agyarkwaa Oti, who gave the purpose for gathering, recalled that the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Home Economics Education programme endowed individuals with marketable skills to fit into the society. She revealed that in line with that rationale the courses sugarcraft and cake decoration, and practice in family living were designed.

“Sugarcraft and Cake Decoration and Practice in Family Living are courses offered by level 400 students in their 8th semester. As part of the course of study, students are taught cake making, types of icing, cake craft, home improvement and many more. Students are expected to ice a cake to depict a theme and produce artefacts for home improvement which forms part of the assessment for the courses HEC 481 and HEC 482. Accordingly, what we will witness today is in fulfilment of what students have learnt from the beginning to the end of the courses,” she stated.

A final year student, Ms. Naomi Uche delivered a brief message on behalf of the student body at the event. In her message, she appreciated Lecturers of the Faculty of Home Economics Education for incorporating sugarcraft and cake decoration into their programme.

“We extend our greatest gratitude to the Departments of Integrated Home Economics and Food and Nutrition for giving us the skills to anchor our entrepreneurial journey after graduation. Our Lecturers have done a yeoman’s job and we say ayekoo for endowing us with some entrepreneurial skills. We have been empowered with relevant skills to train the youth in our schools and communities and we hope that we would help to reduce the unemployment rate in our various communities,” she asserted.
