UEW Theatre Production Brings African History and Culture to Life
The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has reinforced the University's commitment to experiential learning by staging the thought-provoking play, Hell in a Woman’s Heart,” giving students a valuable opportunity to connect classroom theories with real-life artistic expression.
The three-day production, held from Thursday, 25th to Saturday, 27th June, 2026, attracted students and faculty members including Mr. Issaka Akudugu of the Centre for African Studies, who attended with his students as part of a course on Africa’s history, culture and indigenous knowledge systems.
Mr. Akudugu explained that the theatre experience was designed to expose students to Africa’s rich knowledge systems and demonstrate how art and performance serve as powerful tools for preserving culture and generating knowledge beyond the classroom. He noted that the production closely complemented course discussions on identity, ethnicity, colonial influence, masculinity, gender relations and human dignity. This enabled students to appreciate how historical and social realities continue to shape contemporary African societies.
As part of their assessment, students will submit reports analysing the production's relevance to their studies, lessons learned and recommendations for future practical learning activities. Mr. Akudugu emphasised that experiential learning strengthens students' understanding of concepts often confined to lectures and indicated that the Centre for African Studies would continue to integrate similar activities into its academic programmes.
He also commended UEW's vibrant academic and creative environment, highlighting the University's commitment to nurturing students' talents through quality teaching, research, innovation and practical learning.
The initiative reaffirmed UEW's vision of producing graduates who are academically grounded, culturally conscious, creative and well-equipped to make meaningful contributions to society.
