Political Science Education as a subject is very attractive to applicants because of its evolving nature. There has been a growing interest in the subject since the inception of the Department of Political Science Education. The BA Political Science Education programme aims to train professional competent Government teachers, practitioners and researchers for the education and other sectors of Ghana’s space economy. The programme is designed to prepare teachers to teach Government as well as other minor courses such as Economics, Geography, History and Social Studies at the pre-tertiary levels of education in Ghana. The Bachelor of Arts in Political Science Education programme thus provides an important opportunity for the growing number of applicants interested in the subject, and in the process produce graduates to meet the demands of the emerging Colleges of Education and Senior Secondary Schools in the country. Students reading BA Political Science Education are made to select options from BA Social Studies Education, BA Geography Education, BA Economics Education and BA History Education as minor areas. The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Initiate and offer an undergraduate programme in Political Science, Government and Political Science-related areas;
  • Offer the minor students the opportunity to teach all the basic aspects of Government at the pre-tertiary schools in the absence or in combination with their major courses
  • Encourage the production of textbooks in Political Science Education, Government and Citizenship Education as well as other teaching and learning materials for use in the country’s pre-tertiary levels of education;
  • Provide service courses in the subject to students in other disciplines in the University so as to acquaint them with the subject matter of Political Science
  • Conduct timely and relevant research into issues of governance and politics in the country and beyond to promote scholarship in the University
  • Collaborate with schools and relevant agencies (e.g. District Assemblies, non-governmental organisations, public and civil service institutions)
  • Offer relevant services on governance and politics to the non-university community as part of the University’s outreach programme to society at large.

Entry Requirement

Entry Requirements for BA Political Science Education

The entry requirements for the B.A. Political Science Education programme are based on the general minimum requirements by the University of Education, Winneba as well as special departmental entry requirements. These are:

CATEGORY A

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Applicants

WASSCE applicants seeking admission to the BA Political Science Education programme must possess:

  • Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates

The general requirement for admission of WASSCE and SSSCE candidates to the BA Political Science Education programme are three (3) credit passes in three core subjects and three (3) credit passes in three relevant elective subjects.

SSCE Candidates: Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English and Mathematics, plus three relevant elective subjects i.e. Economics, Elective Mathematics, Geography, Government, History, and Religious Studies.

WASSCE Candidates: Credit passes (A1 – C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) relevant elective subjects i.e. Economics, Elective Mathematics, Geography, Government, History, and Religious Studies.

  • General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates

Passes in three (3) relevant subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). i.e. Economics, Mathematics, Geography, Government, History, and Religious Studies. Also the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an arts subject for Science students.

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) Candidates

Candidates must have graduated with good HND certificate (at least 2nd Class Lower Division). In addition, the applicant must have acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience.

CATEGORY B: MATURE APPLICANTS

Mature Applicants seeking admission into the BA Political Science Education programme must be at least 25 years by 1st September of the academic year the applicant wants to enroll. The applicants must also pass both the general UEW and Departmental Entrance Examinations.

Mature teacher applicants seeking admission to the BA Political Science Education programme must fulfil the following conditions:

  • hold a College of Education certificate
  • pass entrance examinations (General Aptitude Test – GAT, and Subject Area Test – SAT) organized by the University of Education, Winneba.

Mature non-teacher applicants seeking admission to the BA Political Science Education programme must fulfil the following conditions:

  • be at least 25 years by 1st September of the academic year in which they wish to enroll.
  • have, at least, two years working experience
  • pass entrance examinations (General Aptitude Test – GAT, and Subject Area Test – SAT, organized by the University of Education, Winneba), an interview or both.
  • Or has a diploma from a recognized tertiary institution.

Special Departmental requirements

Candidate must have a background in the Social Sciences and the Humanities.

*All minor students should have a credit passes of A1 – C5 in Government, and A1-C5 in Mathematics*
