UEW Reviews Postgraduate Research Quality and Academic Standards
The Quality Assurance and Planning Directorate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has engaged Deans of the University on measures to strengthen postgraduate research quality, monitor student progression and uphold academic integrity.
The engagement, held on Friday, 25th September, 2026, at the Registrar’s Conference Room, focused on postgraduate research outputs and impact, cohort-based student data, plagiarism and similarity index procedures, and ethical clearance for research activities. It provided an opportunity for academic leaders to discuss challenges, seek clarification and consider the implications for quality assurance.
Led by Prof. Emma Sarah Eshun, the Director of the Quality Assurance and Planning Directorate, the meeting examined key processes underpinning postgraduate education and research. A major focus was the review of postgraduate cohort data covering admission, retention, dropout, completion and graduation across programmes. The discussions highlighted the importance of tracking students’ academic journeys to better understand progression patterns and inform institutional planning.
Participants also examined postgraduate research outputs and their broader impact, emphasising the importance of assessing research outcomes within the University.
Academic integrity and responsible research conduct were also integral to the engagement, with discussions addressing plagiarism, similarity index procedures and ethical clearance. These areas are central to maintaining academic standards and ensuring research activities adhere to appropriate ethical requirements.
The engagement was chaired by Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UEW, whose participation supported deliberations and responses raised by the Deans.
The meeting brought the University’s academic leadership together to examine issues spanning research quality, student progression, academic integrity and ethical research practice, reinforcing the role of institutional collaboration in sustaining standards in postgraduate education.
