UEW Launches ICAG Students’ Association Chapter to Nurture Future Professionals

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) through its School of Business has launched the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ghana (ICAG) Students’ Association – UEW Chapter. This initiative aims to strengthen professional accounting education and prepare students for successful careers in the accounting profession.

The chapter was inaugurated on Thursday, 18th June 2026, at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre under the theme, “Empowering Future Accountants: Building Ethical and Career-Ready Professionals.” The event brought together representatives from ICAG, UEW Management, faculty members, professional accountants and students.

Chairing the ceremony, Prof. Emmanuel Erastus Yamoah, the Vice-Dean of the School of Business, described the establishment of the chapter as a significant milestone in UEW’s efforts to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice.

He noted that the longstanding partnership between UEW and ICAG had created valuable opportunities for students including professional development initiatives and support for outstanding accounting graduates. He added that the new chapter would provide students with platforms for mentorship, networking, leadership development and deeper engagement with the accounting profession.

Prof. Yamoah encouraged students from accounting, banking and finance, procurement, human resource management and related disciplines to actively participate in the association, describing it as a pathway to professional growth and career advancement.

Dr. Mavis Pobbi, the Head of the Department of Accounting, commended ICAG for establishing the chapter. She noted that it would motivate students to pursue professional accounting qualifications while enhancing their employability.

Dr. Mavis Pobbi urged students to take advantage of the opportunities offered through the association including professional networking, industry exposure and the development of ethical values required in the accounting profession.

Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Eric Oduro Osae, the Chief Executive Officer of ICAG, emphasised the evolving nature of accounting and the need for future professionals to combine technical competence with integrity, ethical conduct and practical experience.

He explained that the UEW chapter forms part of ICAG’s broader agenda to expose students to professional opportunities while still in school. According to him, members would benefit from mentorship programmes, internships and professional networks that would support their growth and transition into the accounting profession.

Mr. Oduro Osae, who disclosed that the UEW chapter is the seventh ICAG Students’ Association chapter established nationwide, challenged students to prioritise character and professionalism, stressing that integrity remains a defining quality for successful accountants.

“The certificate may open doors but character and integrity determine how far professionals go,” he said.

Mrs. Nancy Monney, the Vice President of the ICAG Winneba Society, expressed confidence that the chapter would play a critical role in mentoring and preparing the next generation of accountants. She assured students of the Society’s support through career development programmes, mentorship and professional networking opportunities.

Mr. Holy Amu, the inaugural President of the ICAG Students’ Association – UEW Chapter, described the launch as a historic achievement and outlined the chapter’s vision around three key pillars: knowledge, character and opportunity.

He indicated that the association would organise seminars, workshops and technical training programmes to enhance students’ academic and professional development while promoting ethics, accountability and industry engagement.

The ceremony featured the swearing-in of the chapter’s executives, the official unveiling of the association and a ceremonial cake-cutting to commemorate the occasion.

The establishment of the ICAG Students’ Association – UEW Chapter reinforces UEW’s commitment to producing ethically grounded, industry-ready graduates while strengthening collaboration between academic institutions and the accounting profession.
