TEXFA-UEW Holds 6th Graduates’ Fashion Show
The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), was ablaze with creativity and cultural vibrancy on Saturday, 24th August 2024, as the Department of Textiles and Fashion Education (TEXFA) presented its highly anticipated 6th Graduates’ Fashion Show.
The event, held under the dynamic theme, "Redefining African Fashion Hybridity," at the School of Creative Arts (SCA) Theatre at the Central Campus dazzled attendees.
The fashion show, a highlight in UEW's academic calendar, transformed the runway into a pulsating stage where final-year students showcased their innovative designs, melding traditional African textiles with modern fashion elements. The auditorium, packed with fashion enthusiasts, industry professionals, and proud family members, buzzed with anticipation in celebrating African fashion.
The theme "Redefining African Fashion Hybridity" echoed throughout the presentations, with each collection reflecting a unique fusion of Africa’s rich heritage and contemporary trends. Students dazzled the audience with vibrant local fabrics, intricate beadwork, and elaborate hand-dyeing techniques, all while underscoring their commitment to sustainability and cultural authenticity.
Prof. Emmanuel Rexford Amissah, an Associate Professor at TEXFA-UEW and chairman of the event, urged the audience to support emerging designers with constructive feedback. "Let’s energise these designers on the runway and help launch their careers," Prof. Amissah said, highlighting the significance of the show as a pivotal moment for the students. He shared a personal touch, proudly noting that his two nieces were among the participating designers. “I’m excited to see their talents on display,” he added.
In addition to the runway show, the event featured an exhibition of textile works, showcasing handwoven fabrics, digitally printed materials, and innovative techniques such as tie-dye, batik, and screen printing. This exhibition allowed attendees to appreciate the students' dedication to both tradition and innovation in textile production.
Dr. Isaac Aboagye, Head of TEXFA-UEW, underlined that fashion is a blend of cultures rather than a reflection of one. He praised the students for their impressive use of textiles and colours, noting that the department trains students to discern trends, address market demands, and develop employable skills. “Our focus is on producing fabrics that balance inherent nature, function, and quality,” Dr. Aboagye explained, distinguishing TEXFA from other departments. He encouraged next year’s final-year students to select themes thoughtfully and aim for excellence.
The 6th Graduates’ Fashion Show reaffirmed that African creativity, grounded in tradition and driven by innovation, remains a powerful force in global fashion. The event not only celebrated the talents of UEW’s graduating designers but also highlighted the vibrant future of African fashion on the world stage.
