UEW Begins Dissemination Workshop Series on Digital Literacy Skills
The team of scholars from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), undertaking the GOT Mobility Project funded by the Erasmus+ consortium, has embarked on a project to enhance the digital literacy skills of lecturers through a series of dissemination workshops.
This initiative aims to equip educators with contemporary digital tools, including AI-powered resources like ChatGPT and automated PowerPoint presentation generators.
Prof. Benjamin Ghansah, Head of the Department of Agricultural Science Education at UEW, spearheads the project. Under his leadership, a 15-member team of digital champions from UEW and the University of Cape Coast, who received advanced training in Europe, are now sharing their expertise with their colleagues across the university's five schools and six faculties.
The workshops focus on leveraging AI to enhance teaching, learning, and research, reduce instructor workload, and promote personalised learning. "AI is not foolproof," Prof. Ghansah emphasised in an interview. "It can only provide answers based on its knowledge base, and its effectiveness depends on the user's content proficiency."
The dissemination workshop series is designed to create a ripple effect, empowering faculty members to become ambassadors for digital literacy and AI adoption in universities across Ghana.
Dr. Richard Oduro, Acting Dean of the School of Business, praised the seminar on AI-powered digital tools as timely and enlightening for his faculty members. He expressed gratitude to the project team for demonstrating AI's potential in generating PowerPoint slides, setting exam questions, and personalising learning experiences.
He stressed the importance of mastering one's subject area to effectively utilise AI, ensuring accuracy and relevance in the information generated. He also noted the need for lecturers to keep pace with AI-inclined students, expressing optimism that the seminar would significantly enhance teaching and learning within the faculty.
Other key members of the GOT Mobility Project team from UEW include Dr. Philip Siaw Kissi, Dr. Patricia Ananga, Dr. Stephen Opoku Oppong, Dr. Kwabena Kyere, and Mr. Daniel Danso Essel. Their collective efforts are expected to transform digital literacy among lecturers, fostering a culture of innovation and modern teaching practices at UEW and beyond.
