Brief history
The Department of Gur-Gonja Education was carved out of erstwhile Department of Ghanaian Languages in August, 2003. In August 2014, the Department moved from Winneba Campus to Ajumako Campus. The Department of Gur-Gonja Education, is established with the special mandate of training specialists in eight Ghanaian languages (Dagbani, Gonja, Gurene, Kasem, Kusal, Dagaare, Sissali and Likpakpaanl) for teaching, research and industry.
Mission
To train competent professional Ghanaian Language teachers for all levels of education as well as conduct research into Mabia linguistics, translation, culture, literature for documentation dissemination of knowledge and contribute to language policy in education and development.
Vision
To be a world-class Department for training excellent Ghanaian Language teachers for all levels of Education, as well as a center of innovation and research in Ghanaian Languages, Mabia culture, African literature and linguistics.
Goals/Values/Objectives
The Department, among other things, aims to:
- Produce professional graduates with the requisite linguistic, literature and cultural orientation, who are capable of teaching and researching into the indigenous languages, translation and culture.
- Inculcate in the students, the spirit of love and appreciation of their languages, literature and culture.
- Provide the graduates with the appropriate linguistic knowledge and skills to be able to document and preserve the (Mabia) Gur-Gonja languages, literature and culture for posterity.
- To imbue in citizens love, heritage and patriotism for national unity and development.
