About Us

Brief history

The Department of French Education, University of Education, Winneba, is under the Faculty of Foreign Languages Education and Communication. It was established in September, 1985 to start a three-year Diploma in French Education programme at the then Advanced Teacher Training College, Winneba. The aim of its establishment was to promote the teaching of French at the Second Cycle level and to give opportunity to teachers of French to upgrade themselves. It became a fully recognised Centre for effective Teacher Education programmes in French when the seven Diploma Awarding Institutions were reorganised into the University College of Education of Winneba (UCEW) in September, 1992 which was granted autonomy with effect from 11th March 2004 to become the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) after twelve (12) years of excellent implementation of its aims and objectives.

Currently, the Department runs seven undergraduate and graduate programmes in regular and sandwich modes. These are tailored to suit its target group made up of workers, Senior High School graduates and other professionals. The following four sandwich programmes are available for both undergraduate and graduate applicants: 1-Year Certificate in French, 2-Year Diploma in French, M.A. French (Translation) and MEd in French. The regular programmes are B.A French, 2-Year Post Diploma in French, Mphil French and PhD in French.

Achievements

Over the last thirty-four years, the Department of French Education has produced graduates who continue to contribute to national development in all sectors of the economy, notably in education, business, security and hospitality. Our regular undergraduate students excel continuously in annual competitions such as Francophonie Week celebrations. Over the years the Department has carved a niche for itself as one of the very few departments in UEW which run all programmes – from Certificate to terminal degrees. Thus, it has become a One-Stop shop for prospective applicants seeking admission to different programmes in French.  Currently, more than half the staff of the Department are its own products who had the chance of being groomed through its staff development programme.
