HISTORY

The Department of Mathematics Education is one of the oldest departments in the Faculty of Science Education of the University of Education, Winneba. It started with the establishment of the university college in 1992.  Since 1992, there have been continuous curricular reforms including ICT in mathematics education. At the start, 3-year Diploma and 2-year Post-Diploma programmes were run concurrently leading to the award of Diploma and B.Ed. degrees in Mathematics Education. Both Diploma and Post-Diploma programmes were in two Tracks: Track A and Track B. The Track A programmes were enhanced mathematics education programmes designed to produced Diploma and graduate professional teachers for secondary schools while the Track B programmes turned out Diploma and graduate professionals for Basic schools. By 2000, the Track B element was phased-out. In the 2005/2006 academic year, two postgraduate programmes (M.Ed. Mathematics and MPhil Mathematics education) were introduced. PhD in Mathematics Education was also introduced in the 2011/12 academic year. The Department has since remained focused on producing professionally competent graduate teachers for all levels of education locally and internationally.

VISION STATEMENT

The Department shall become one of the best Mathematics Education Departments in Africa, renowned for the training of quality teachers in Mathematics Education.   

MISSION STATEMENT

The Department’ vision is to produce competent graduate teachers capable of generating interest in the teaching/learning of Mathematics at the pre-tertiary level. It also conducts research; disseminate relevant knowledge and influences educational policy in Mathematics Education and ICT integration in Ghana.   

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Department is to produce competent graduate teachers for the teaching Mathematics at the pre-tertiary level, conduct research, and disseminate relevant knowledge and to influence educational policy-practice in Mathematics Education/ICT Education in Ghana.
