ASSOCIATION

The Department has a student association called the Association of Mathematics Education Students (AMES). The association was formed in the year 2003. Although membership to the association is voluntary, all students in the department are encouraged to be members. Currently, the association has more than 1000 members.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aims and objectives of AMES are to:

  • Foster unity and friendship among members and academic staff of the University.
  • See to the provision of all resources that will help members in their academic advancement.
  • Undertake projects that will benefit members in and outside the University community.
  • Promote good relationship between the Mathematics Department and other Departments in the University.
  • Serve as a link between members and Mathematical Association of Ghana (MAG) as well as other Universities worldwide.

PROGRAMMES

The AMES undertake activities such as: General Meetings, Departmental Orientations & Freshers’ Forum, Health Screening, Health Walk & Aerobics, Fresher’s Akwaaba Night (FLS & STARS), Prospective Mathematics Educator’s Conference (PROMEC), Town Hall Meetings, and Beauty Contests (Miss AMES)

ACHIEVEMENTS

Below are some of the achievements of the association:

  • Production of the Association’s Cloth;
  • Production of souvenirs such as: Brooches, Wrist bands, Lacoste T-shirts, among others;
  • Purchasing of a notice board;
  • Purchasing a photocopier machines for the use of members; and
  • Organization of annual seminars and programs to support the ladies within the Association.

LEADERS

The Association has the Head of Department as its Chief Patron and one lecturer nominated by the head in consultation with the executives as the patron. Currently, the association has ten (10) executive members. Leadership of the association for the 2019/2020 academic year is as presented in Table 2.
