About Us
At the inception of the University College of Education, Winneba (UCEW) and later full University, the Department of Science Education, under the Faculty of Science Education had four units, namely, Biology Unit, Chemistry Unit, Physics Unit, and Integrated Science Unit. The Biology unit was responsible for all the Biology courses in Diploma and Post-diploma programmes, which were run by the then Department of Science Education. Professional teachers who qualified to apply to do Diploma or Post-diploma programmes did so by writing and passing an Entrance Examination. Only few applicants were successful in enrolling on the Science Education Programme. Considering the low trend of the applicants and also taking cognisance of the scarcity of Science teachers in the Senior High Schools and other pre-tertiary institutions, there was the need to allow final year students from the Senior High Schools to apply directly to pursue a four-year degree programme in Science Education. This resulted in astronomical increase in the number of applicants to pursue the programmes in the Department of Science Education. Furthermore, there was that need for science teachers with expertise in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Integrated Science in the secondary school level. Hence, at the beginning of the 2010/2011 academic year the Department of Science Education was split into four (4) separate Departments (Departments of Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Physics Education and Integrated Science Education), each with its own Head of Department. The units were upgraded to the status of departments.
