DRID Empowers CoLANG Senior Members on Grant Sourcing and Proposal Writing
The Directorate of Research, Innovation, and Development (DRID) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), in a strategic move to enhance the professional capabilities of teaching and non-teaching senior members at the Faculty of Ghanaian Languages Education (CoLANG) at the Ajumako Campus, organised a day-long workshop on grant sourcing and proposal writing.
The workshop, held at the Video Conference Room (VCR) on Wednesday, 8th November 2023, aimed at equipping CoLANG staff with the necessary skills to navigate the realm of grantsmanship effectively. Prior to the workshop, the DRID team paid a courtesy call to the Principal of CoLANG, Prof. Dominic Danso Mensah, and his management team, receiving commendation for their proactive initiative.
Expressing his gratitude, Prof. Danso Mensah urged the DRID team to continue supporting faculty members in grant sourcing and proposal writing, showcasing his confidence in the team's ability to fulfill its mandate. He also highlighted foundations such as Ford, Rocky Fella, and Bill Gates as potential sources for grants.
Prof. Samuel Alhassan Issah, the Dean of CoLANG, delivered the welcome address at the workshop. Prof. Issah praised the DRID team for organising a comprehensive grantsmanship workshop and suggested exploring alternative revenue streams to run the university in addition to tuition fees for participants, emphasising the importance of winning grants for faculty promotion.
He disclosed the formation of a Faculty Proposal Writing Committee within CoLANG, dedicated to pursuing and winning grants for the College. Prof. Issah expressed his desire to see the university acknowledging some grant-winning faculty members of the College on its website.
Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, the Director of DRID, emphasised the significance of grantsmanship in professional development and encouraged participants to collaborate in proposal writing. She assured them of DRID's unwavering support throughout the proposal writing process.
Presentations during the workshop covered a spectrum of topics, including the history of DRID, grant proposal writing, grant sourcing, and budget preparation. Mr. Michael Amo Asiedu, Dr. Peter Akayuure, Dr. Philip Siaw Kissi, and Mr. Amos Dadzie made the presentations, respectively.
Dr. Akayuure differentiated between technical and financial proposals, urging participants to thoroughly understand the call requirements. He encouraged participants to always check the funders’ website as well as the frequently asked questions.
Participants expressed their gratitude for the enlightening workshop and acknowledged DRID's role in empowering CoLANG staff in the critical domains of grant sourcing and proposal writing. The workshop not only equipped participants with essential skills but also underscored the commitment of UEW to fostering professional growth and institutional advancement.
