Integrating the natural and social sciences
Integrating the natural and social sciences
The time has come for the natural sciences and social sciences to integrate their disciplines for the development of holistic principles of life and possible solutions to real life challenges. This study was premised on the principles of humanitarianism, sustainability, security, and love. The underlying theory was the social constructivist theory, as it was to help 22 learners to construct and transform their ideas about the intersection of natural and social sciences in an active, motivating, and non-discriminatory, learning environment. Instruments used to gather data were observation checklist and semi-structured guided conversations. Data was interpreted qualitatively. Findings showed that, participants acquired process, transferrable and concept skills for lifelong living. Participants became aware of applying scientific knowledge to solve some humanitarian challenges. Furthermore, they developed attributes such as carefulness, honesty, patience, critical thinking, reflective and analytical skills. Data from the conversation sessions corroborated findings from the observation and further indicated that participants perceived that science integrated in the social sciences and vice versa was feasible. It was concluded that, exposing students to real life experiences in a safe environment through chemical and social principles made them appreciate the chemistry concepts in the social sciences, as well as the social science concepts in chemistry better.
