Aims

The programme seeks to provide opportunities for students to develop their unique pedagogical content knowledge in Biology and train quality Biology teachers to teach at the Senior High School (SHS) level nationally and internationally.

Specific objectives of the B.Sc. Biology Education programme

The specific objectives are to:

  1. equip students with relevant Biology teaching skills to enable them teach with confidence at the Senior High School (SHS) level;
  2. provide opportunities for students to use their creative knowledge, practical skills and research abilities to design teaching and learning materials for use in teaching Biology at SHS level;
  3. imbue in students the necessary skills that will enable them identify the relevant Biology concepts needed to explain phenomena in nature and discuss current issues and ideas;
  4. make students acquire problem-solving strategies and skills needed to solve  Biology problems; and
  5. train Biology teachers with the skills of reflection and become reflective practitioners in their profession as Biology teachers

Entry Requirement

Entry requirements for admission of students into B.Sc. (Biology Education) programme:

 

Category A: Senior High School Certificate Holders

The applicants must have:

i.      at least six (6) WASSCE credit passes in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science as well as credit passes in Biology and two other elective subjects (Chemistry, Physics and Elective Mathematics)

OR

ii.    six SSSCE credit passes (not lower than grade ‘D’) at SSSCE in three core subjects (English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science) as well as a credit pass in Biology and two other elective subjects (Chemistry, Physics and Elective Mathematics).

iii.   students who wish to read Biology as a minor course from other Departments such as Special Education should have not lower than C6 (for WASSCE) or D (for SSSCE) in Biology and either Chemistry or Physics.  Agricultural Science will not be considered.

 

Category B: Mature Candidates

The applicant must:

i.           be at least 25 years of age at 1st August of year of admission.

ii.         hold Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ or a SHS Certificate or Certificate of Professional Training from a recognised institution.

iii.       pass the University’s Entrance Examination/interview for the year in question.

Category C: Holders of relevant Diploma

The applicant must:

i.      possess a Higher National Diploma or its equivalent in a relevant subject (determined by the department) from a recognised institution.

ii.    pass the University’s interview.

Note: Successful candidates in this category will be placed at level 200 (or at an appropriate level determined by the Department) of the Four-Year Degree programme.

 

Category D: School Certificate/GCE ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level Holders

The applicant must:

i.      possess five (5) credits passes at GCE ‘O’ Level including English Language, Mathematics and three pure science subjects

ii.    possess two ‘A’ level passes in Biology and two other pure science subjects (Chemistry, Physics).

Note: Applicants with ‘A’ Level passes more than five (5) years old should apply as mature students
