-
Improved teaching and learning materials
-
Enhanced classroom infrastructure
-
Holistic development of pupils and trainee teachers
Investment in the Basic School directly improves teacher preparation and learning outcomes.
University of Education, Winneba – Hospital

Support for the University of Education, Winneba Hospital is a strategic priority, given its central role in delivering essential healthcare services to students, staff, and neighbouring communities. The Hospital is a critical pillar of the University’s welfare system and public health responsibility, providing preventive, diagnostic, and curative care that directly supports academic performance, staff productivity, and community wellbeing.
Sustained financial and material support is essential to enable the Hospital to maintain, upgrade, and replace medical equipment in line with modern healthcare standards. Such investment strengthens service delivery and supports the expansion of clinical capacity, including the development of specialised clinics, improved emergency response systems, and enhanced diagnostic and laboratory services.
In addition, targeted contributions improve the overall quality of patient care by supporting continuous staff training, procurement of critical medical supplies, and infrastructure improvement. Through strategic and sustained support, the University Hospital is better positioned to deliver safe, efficient, and patient-centred healthcare while expanding its capacity to meet the growing needs of the University community and the wider public.
Centre for Hearing and Speech Services (CHSS) – Audiology Centre

The Centre for Hearing and Speech Services is a specialised facility under the Department of Special Education, located on the South Campus of the University of Education, Winneba. Established in 1993, the Centre delivers professional hearing and speech services while supporting inclusive education and public health in Ghana.
CHSS provides hearing screening, diagnostic assessment, and management services for children and adults with hearing and speech disorders. The Centre also plays a key academic role by serving as a practical training facility for students in the Department of Special Education and supporting the placement and inclusion of children with hearing impairment. Services are offered to the public at highly subsidised rates as part of the University’s community service mandate.
Strategic Importance
CHSS is the only facility in Ghana that provides structured in-service training in hearing assessment and diagnosis for resource teachers, rehabilitation officers, and special educators. It collaborates with healthcare professionals and institutions nationwide and forms part of UEW’s mandatory medical screening programme for first-year students, ensuring early identification and support for hearing loss.
The Centre receives referrals from major hospitals across the Central and Western Regions, underscoring its national relevance and impact.
Priority Need for Support
CHSS currently faces critical challenges due to ageing and non-functional equipment, much of which is over two decades old. Limited access to modern audiological equipment has constrained service availability and capacity.
Targeted investment in equipment and facility upgrades will significantly enhance service delivery, strengthen professional training, and expand access to evidence-based hearing and speech services.
Impact
Strategic support for CHSS will:
-
Restore and expand diagnostic and treatment services
-
Strengthen training for future special education professionals
-
Improve early detection and intervention for hearing loss
-
Advance inclusive education and healthcare delivery nationally
With adequate investment, the Centre for Hearing and Speech Services will continue to serve as a vital resource to the University of Education, Winneba and a centre of excellence in audiology and speech services in Ghana.
