About Us
Brief History
The Department of Music Education of the University of Education, Winneba is the erstwhile National Academy of Music established in 1978. In 1992, the National Academy of Music was absorbed into the then University College of Education as the Department of Music Education. It has continued to train both music teachers and musicians. In 1995, it began to admit Secondary School leavers into the Bachelor of Arts in Education (Music) programme, which had hitherto been the preserve of already trained professional teachers.
This is association from the Department of Music Education, School of Creative Arts which was created primarily to serve as the mouth piece of all music students within the department. To assist both the department in the organizing of programs, workshop and other innovative events that will improve upon the academic life of students and be of benefit to the department.
Mission
To train and inculcate in its products the requisite knowledge and practical skills in music teaching at all pre-tertiary and tertiary levels of education in Ghana, train professional musicians in various areas of the music industry, conduct cutting-edge research and provide administrative leadership in the arts.
Vision
The Department of Music Education shall be a centre of excellence for the training of music educators as well as professional musicians, and be internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for research and the promotion of African Music and Dance in schools.

Achievement
The Department continues to be engaged in all the statutory and other functions organized in and outside the university. Expertise of lecturers is used by West African Examinations Council, National Accreditation Board, Syllabus Review of Pre-tertiary Institutions, and Adjudication of cultural performances across Ghana as well as engagements in church musical programmes. The Department hopes to open its ensembles to the University community and the Winneba Community. These will train interested kids and youth who want to play any of our various available instruments and belong to any of our ensembles: Orchestra; African ensemble; Choral ensemble; Pop Band Ensemble and Winds ensemble.
- Successfully organized the Music film workshop to educate members on how to compose music for movies and short clips
- Successfully organized the Creative Arts and Intellectual Property Seminar to educate members on Copyright laws and how to protect one’s creative works.
- Successfully organized the outdoor music program (Music for You) held weekly at Central Campus
- Assisted with the advertisement and organization of the Christmas Concert 2019 dubbed “Wondrous Sign”
