UEW Strengthens Global AI Leadership at Inaugural UN Dialogue on AI Governance

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) reaffirmed its commitment to the responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) and participation in global digital transformation.

This commitment was highlighted during the inaugural United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance, from 6th to 7th July, 2026, at the Palexpo Conference Centre in Geneva, Switzerland. Prof. Delali Kwasi Dake, Head of the Department of ICT Education at UEW, represented the University at the conference.

Established by the United Nations General Assembly under the Global Digital Compact at the 2024 Summit of the Future, the Dialogue convened representatives from all 193 UN Member States with leaders from academia, industry, international organisations, civil society and the technical community to shape a shared vision for the governance of AI.

Opening the event, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged the international community to strengthen cooperation on AI governance. He stressed that technological advancement is outpacing existing regulatory frameworks. He called for human-centred, transparent and accountable AI systems that uphold human rights while ensuring developing countries are fully integrated into the global AI ecosystem.

Discussions centred on international cooperation, AI safety and accountability, ethical and inclusive AI development, equitable access to AI technologies, capacity building and strategies for narrowing the global AI divide. Participants also shared national experiences and emerging governance frameworks to foster greater collaboration across governments, academia, industry and civil society.

The Dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment to sustained multistakeholder engagement on AI governance, establishing a platform for continued international cooperation, knowledge sharing and consensus building rather than pursuing a binding global treaty.
