ITECPD Welcomes New Director

The Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) held a handover ceremony on Monday, 11th August, 2025, transferring leadership from the outgoing Director, Prof. Samuel Bekoe to his successor Prof. Michael Subbey.

The occasion also honoured other departing staff members and welcomed new appointees, reaffirming the Institute’s culture of service, collaboration and excellence.

Dr. Munkaila Seibu, Deputy Director of ITECPD, lauded Prof. Bekoe’s visionary leadership, highlighting his role in fostering innovation, professionalism and institutional growth. He pledged the Institute’s unflinching support to Prof. Subbey in sustaining and expanding the achievements of his predecessor.

Mr. Andy Y. Agordah, Senior Assistant Registrar at ITECPD, explained that the leadership change followed Prof. Bekoe’s appointment as Director-General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), a prestigious national role that underscores his distinguished service. He noted that the gathering was both a farewell to valued colleagues and a warm welcome to new members of the ITECPD family.

In an emotional farewell address, Prof. Bekoe recounted the Institute’s transformation under his tenure, from streamlining student records to initiating plans for an instructional laboratory and studio to enhance teacher training and research. He revealed ongoing talks for an international collaboration with a Japanese national institute, which, once formalised, will boost professional development and instructional practice in Ghana.

Prof. Subbey, in his inaugural address as director, acknowledged the magnitude of the role, describing it as stepping into “expanding shoes.” Drawing on his prior service within ITECPD, he vowed to leverage existing successes, with a particular focus on research and advancing the proposed Japanese partnership.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of citations to four distinguished departing staff, Dr. Samuel Poatob, Dr. Inuusah Mahama, Mr. Francis Frimpong and Mr. Gershon Kwame Mantey, in recognition of their dedicated service and outstanding contributions to the Institute.

Other speakers, including Dr. Poatob and Dr. Mahama, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and assured their continued support for ITECPD’s mission.

The event closed with a renewed spirit of optimism as staff and management pledged to work together in driving the Institute to greater heights in service to UEW and Ghana’s educational development.
