Description

The programme aims at equipping students with the requisite theoretical knowledge and practical skills to enable them cope with the challenges involved in the teaching of Home Economics and lays a solid foundation for further studies (M.Phil. and PhD) in Home Economics.

The programme is designed to advance professional competence in teaching and curriculum development. It enhances critical thinking and research skills for problem-solving in educational and community contexts. The programme also fosters leadership in Home Economics education and community outreach.

Entry Requirement

a. Entry requirements for admission

A candidate seeking admission into this programme shall be required to obtain a B.Ed. Home Economics degree from UEW or an equivalent qualification of B.A. or B.Sc Home Economics/Home Science/Family and Consumer Science/Catering and Hospitality/Fashion from any other University recognized by the Academic Board of UEW with a grading not below a Second Class Lower Division.

Candidates with Third Class who wish to pursue this programme may be admitted after passing an entrance examination.

b. Progression from MA/M.Ed/M. Tech. to M.Phil.

A student may progress from 12 calendar months/two sandwich sessions of the Master’s programme to 24 24-month Master of Philosophy programme.

To be eligible for progression from M.A./M.Ed/M. To M.Phil., a student must have obtained a CGPA of at least 3.0 or a B average at the end of the M.A./M.Ed. course work. A student must present a comprehensive M.Phil. research proposal for assessment by his /her Departmental Graduate Committee. Such a student should apply to his/her Departmental Graduate Committee through the Head of Department at the end of the second semester/session.

Graduation

The minimum credit hours required for graduation are 39, and the maximum credit hours are 45, comprising the following:

I taught courses and a Seminar, making a total of between 24-30 Credit Hours.

ii. Dissertation of 15 Credit Hours.

1. BSc. Integrated Home Economics Education

This undergraduate degree certifies that the holder has completed a comprehensive programme in Home Economics Education, with a strong foundation in family and consumer sciences, pedagogical methods, and interdisciplinary applications. Graduates are qualified to teach Home Economics at the pre-tertiary level and contribute meaningfully to community development and educational practice.

2. M.Phil. Home Economics Education

This research-oriented postgraduate degree certifies that the holder has attained a high level of academic and research competence in Home Economics Education. It prepares graduates for careers in academia, policy analysis, and educational research, and serves as a pathway to doctoral studies.

3. M.Ed. Home Economics 

This postgraduate professional degree certifies advanced knowledge and expertise in Home Economics education, with a focus on curriculum development, instructional leadership, and applied research. It prepares graduates for roles in teaching, educational administration, and community-based initiatives.
