Department of Health Administration and Education Marks 10th Anniversary
The Department of Health Administration and Education, under the Faculty of Science Education (FSE), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has organised a weeklong series of activities to commemorate its ten-year anniversary celebration.
The Department on Monday, 19th June, 2023, organised a health walk around the principal streets of Winneba and donated toiletries to inmates at the Winneba Prisons. The Department also conducted basic health examinations for blood pressure, body mass index, and eyesight along with an interschool debate with the University of Ghana's Public Administration and Health students the following day.
The Department hosted a career-building seminar on Wednesday, 21st June, 2023, with business owners and seasoned instructors who spoke to students on entrepreneurship. Thursday, the 22nd of June, concluded the on-campus activities with a symposium on the theme “Strengthening Healthcare Management Systems Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3: The Role of Health Services Administrators Training in Ghana”.
Students of the Department had inter-level sports and recreational games on Friday, 23rd June, and a gala night for socialisation and networking with alumni on Saturday, 24th June. Sunday, 25th June, 2023, saw a Thanksgiving Service to end the weeklong celebration. The one-week celebration dovetails into activities earmarked to commemorate a yearlong celebration.
In an interview with the Head of the Department (HoD), Dr. Fred Yao Gbagbo, he recounted how the Department was established in 2013 to train administrators for the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and other healthcare delivery sectors in the country.
"Basically, we run programmes tailored to health administration. We look at clinical courses and basic health sciences, and we focus more on administrative courses. We offer a four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Health Administration Education.
"The Department has progressed exponentially. Currently, we have about 419 students, and we have introduced 10 programmes within these 10 years: three undergraduate programmes and seven postgraduate programmes, including B.Sc. Public Health, M.Phil. Public Health, Health Promotion and Education, and a master’s in Health Administration and Education," he said.
Dr. Gbagbo urged staff and students of the Department to be modest in their celebrations while being proud of the Department's successes.
“We are ten years old, and this is the beginning of greater things to come. As we celebrate in moderation, it’s good to be proud of our achievements. Let’s chart a good path forward, knowing that we have a brighter future for the Department and UEW,” he advised.
The Management of UEW, past Deans of FSE, former HoDs of the Department, alumni and collaborators from the GHS attended the activity climaxing the on-campus events.
