DCE-UEW Hosts Outreach Programme to Ignite Passion for Practical Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry Education at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), in collaboration with the Ghana Students’ Chemical Society (GSCS), recently organised an educational outreach for students from Mando Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
The event aimed to provide hands-on learning experiences and practical applications of chemistry concepts to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of chemists. Over 50 science students from Mando SHTS participated in the event.
The initiative introduced the students to UEW's vibrant chemistry education environment and aimed to hone their essential analytical techniques and problem-solving skills.
Prof. Arkoful Sam, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Science Education at UEW, commended the organisers for promoting chemistry education and emphasised the importance of practical experiences in fostering scientific process skills.
Dr. Boniface Yaayin, Patron of GSCS and a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry Education, introduced the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Education programme and the Master of Philosophy in Chemistry Education programme as postgraduate options. He outlined the comprehensive curriculum, emphasising the programmes’ focus on developing problem-solving abilities, creativity, and innovative thinking, essential for various career paths.
Mr. Prince Fobih, President of GSCS, highlighted the organisation’s commitment to community engagement and academic excellence, stressing the goal of providing Mando SHTS students with a unique opportunity for experiential learning in chemistry.
The practical sessions were carefully conducted to ensure the students’ safety, with Mr. Lawrence Ohuapo-Agyemang, the Laboratory Technician, guiding them on essential lab safety procedures.
The outreach event provided the students with invaluable practical experience and strengthened their confidence in chemistry, setting the stage for them to pursue further education and careers in this dynamic field. The collaboration between UEW’s Department of Chemistry Education and GSCS continues to foster the next generation of chemists in Ghana.
