UEW Student Designs Wayfinding System for University Hospital
A final-year Graphic Design student at the Department of Art Education of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has developed and donated a wayfinding system to the University Hospital to enhance navigation for staff, patients and visitors.
Ms. Vanessa Adomako Zisu undertook the project as part of her final-year requirement, under the supervision of Mr. Ebenezer Ekow Abraham of the Department of Art and Design. According to Mr. Abraham, the department has encouraged students to undertake research and project work that provide practical solutions to community needs rather than limiting their efforts to theoretical studies.
“She came up with the idea of a wayfinding system to help people who come to the hospital find their way easily. It involved extensive reviews of similar systems in other hospitals and though the ideation process was challenging, I am very proud of what she has achieved,” Mr. Abraham stated.
Presenting the project, Ms. Vanessa Zisu said the task was not without difficulties but ultimately rewarding. “Initially, it was not easy, but in the end, I was able to design a wayfinding system that will help the staff, visitors and patients here at the University Hospital,” she noted.
The hospital’s management, represented by Mr. Isaac Darkoh, Head of Administration, received the donation and commended the initiative. “We are grateful for this practical and problem-solving project. Often, student projects remain on shelves but this one addresses a real need. On behalf of the hospital, we thank you for the ingenuity and the contribution,” Mr. Darkoh said.
The project is expected to improve accessibility and ease of movement within the hospital, ensuring that patients and visitors can navigate the facility more efficiently.
