COLTEK ADMITS FIRST BATCH MATHS STUDENTS

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has admitted the first batch of 140 students into its BSc. Mathematics Education programme newly introduced at its College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) campus.

They formed part of a total of 2, 512 fresh students who were matriculated on October 20, 2017 to commence various undergraduate and graduate programmes at COLTEK for the 2017/2018 academic year.

The Acting Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful- Broni, in his address to the fresh students, pointed to the fact that the introduction of the BSc. Mathematics Education at COLTEK was an ample demonstration of the University’s commitment to make academic programmes accessible to students. “UEW will continue to introduce more innovative and market-driven programmes to meet and address the variety of human resource requirements of the Republic, for its continuous growth and development”, he added. He assured the public of the university’s tireless efforts towards improving facilities, programmes and human resource to adequately meet the large numbers of admission applications the UEW receives annually.

Touching on students’ welfare while at UEW, he drew the attention of the fresh students to several scholarships available in the university that qualified students could take advantage of. For instance, Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni mentioned the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund for Needy but Brilliant Students (VCSF) from which he said about 300 students had already benefitted and encouraged the fresh students to grab the opportunity if they suited the criteria.

According to him, UEW was deriving various opportunities from collaborating with universities abroad and cited as an example, scholarships for further studies for faculty members. The Acting Vice-Chancellor was optimistic that such collaborations, among other things, would strengthen capacity, create and expand opportunities for more staff and students to benefit and therefore, appealed for support from staff and students to sustain such laudable initiative. He admonished the fresh students to be guided by the core values of the university in all their doings, stressing that “the spirit of excellence calls for hardwork, discipline, respect for time, critical thinking and thorough analyses of issues, creativity and a winning attitude to life”. “It is important to work towards a paradigm shift from old ways of doing things” he added.
