136 UEW Students Receive NAkDeF Scholarship

A total of 136 students from COLTEK of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have been awarded scholarships by the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation (NAkDeF), a subsidiary of Newmont Gold Corps (formerly Newmont Ghana Limited).

A 10-member NAkDeF team led by Madam Gloria Mensah has called on the Management of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) to officially present the list of the beneficiaries and to explore the possibility of a stronger bond between NAkDeF and UEW.

Addressing the team, College Registrar, Mr. Michael Kofi Adu suggested that the gold mining company considers offering special awards for the College’s best performing students and best performing NAkDeF sponsored students on its various academic programmes.

Such a move, he said would go a long way to bridge the gap between NAkDeF and Corporate Ghana and the same time serve as a way to encourage serious academic work among students.

Mr. Adu was also of the opinion that the institution of a special award would not only boost the bond between the two institutions but endear them to the benefactor the more. This will further increase the profile of the organisation particularly in the area of being alive to its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

He said UEW is happy to establish stronger relations with Newmont Gold Corps (NGC) and very optimistic that such a move would culminate in mutually beneficial outcomes for the two institutions. He stressed that this collaboration was in line with theme four of UEW’s 2019-2023 Corporate Strategic Plan which amplifies the University’s dedication to establish partnerships for development.

Leader of the visiting 10-member NAkDeF team, Madam Gloria Mensah assured COLTEK that the special award request would be relayed to the management of the Foundation for consideration.

She explained that not long after operations in Ghana and particularly in the Akyem area of Ghana, her Company instituted the scholarship package to support best performing students from its catchment areas.

From 2014/2015 when the scholarship scheme started, she said, about 3,000 students had benefited, adding that until the introduction of the Free SHS policy, the scheme covered students from second cycle institutions as well.

The visit, she explained, was to assure UEW of her outfit’s undying commitment to continue sponsoring the beneficiaries for their entire years of studentship and therefore, it should not be alarmed in the unlikely event of slight delays in payment.

Again, she hoped that UEW would cooperate with the benefactors should it become necessary for the corporate entity to request the results and assessment of conducts of the beneficiaries since the scholarship is tied to continued excellent academic performance and good conduct of beneficiaries.

The scholarship amounts, ranging from GH¢2, 000 to GH¢3,000 is to pay University Facility User Fees and take care of other pertinent cost(s) that the beneficiaries might incur in relation to life on campus.
