Winneba (C/R), May 18, GNA-

Dr Mrs Dinah Baah-Odoom, the Registrar of Ghana Psychology Council, has urged student counsellors to live up to expectation by acquiring knowledge and skills that will add value to the care they provide for their clients.

Dr Mrs Baah-Odoom made the call while addressing a durbar to commemorate the 18th Anniversary celebration of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) Chapter of the Student Counsellors Association of Ghana.

The celebration was on the theme: “Towards Professionalism in School and Work Place Counselling”.

She advised them to make the best use of the opportunities available to them, study hard, be disciplined, abide by the regulations of the institution and the ethics of the profession to enable them to be the best counselors for national development.

Dr Baah-Odoom said the critical role of counselors in promoting and maintaining emotional and mental health and the well-being of students and workers could not be overemphasized.

He said counsellors were professionals with specialised knowledge who worked with vulnerable population to help them reduce their emotional stress.

He said by virtue of the nature of the counsellor-client relationship, counsellors were expected to be honest, trustworthy, and endeavour to protect the best interest of their client as enshrined in the Code of Ethics.

“You have the collective responsibility to help create a conducive environment that will facilitate teaching and learning and in the future practice your profession within the confines of the law and maintain high professional standards at all times,” she added.
