The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Prof. Mawutor Avoke, has reassured freshmen of the 2022/2023 academic year of the university's preparedness to infuse its peculiar brand of training into equipping them for the real world.

He stated that the university was committed to offering students a once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunity that would enable them to significantly impact society.

The Vice-Chancellor gave this assurance on Friday, 24th February, 2023, during matriculation ceremonies held at the Winneba and Ajumako campuses of the university.

“We have and will continue to stock our libraries with a wide range of relevant resources for your research and use. These include books and online publications. Our libraries collectively hold tens of thousands of books and periodicals. We offer online access to over 40,000 articles, databases, and catalogues from around the world,” he indicated.

Prof. Avoke revealed the University Clinic’s readiness to offer clinical psychology services to support students’ academic and general life endeavours. He informed matriculants about the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund (VCSF), which assists brilliant and needy undergraduate students in reducing financial barriers to accessing education at UEW.

“Through the VCSF, financial assistance is provided to qualified students to meet their educational expenses. Students facing financial challenges are encouraged to apply for consideration when it is advertised. Financial assistance in the form of the Students’ Loan Trust Fund is also available for undergraduate students. You may contact the Students Loan Trust Fund office to initiate the process of applying for the Students’ Loan,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor advised matriculants to use their knowledge to benefit others to uphold the UEW motto, "Education for Service." He challenged students to get involved in the UEW community and contribute to building the society they envisioned in their local communities.

“Know that the University’s programmes are among the best in the world, and to succeed, you would need to put in a lot of effort, attend lectures and practical classes regularly, as well as complete class assignments on time. I encourage you to work hard in class, act ethically, and avoid negative habits. You are encouraged to limit outings and avoid being lazy.

“Remain focused and rational in your decisions. Choose your friends wisely, socialise responsibly, eat well and healthily, and avoid all negative influences. Let go of minor issues that cause you stress. You need positive vibrations in your lives to go through the academic environment successfully,” he advised.

It was revealed at the ceremony that a total of 8,823 had reported at Winneba and 797 for Ajumako Campus. In the postgraduate category, a total of 2,899 were admitted to the Winneba Campus, while the remaining 48 were admitted to the Ajumako Campus.

Matriculation ceremonies are statutory processes that confer membership in the University on fresh students after they have fulfilled the academic prerequisites for admission by taking the matriculation oath. The oath binds the fresh students to abide by all the rules and regulations of the University as enshrined in the students’ handbook and other authorised documents of the University.

The oath also requires students to be of good behaviour while pursuing their studies at the University. The event bestows on Matriculants all rights and privileges recognised by the University as well as an obligation on the University Management, to seek the welfare of students.
