UEW Matriculates 13,754 Freshmen on Winneba Campus

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has today, Wednesday, 2nd October, 2019 matriculated a total of 13,754 registered students at the Winneba Campus of the University.

The ceremony, held at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre Grounds, provided the opportunity for the freshmen to pledge their allegiance to the authority of the University through the administration of the Matriculation Oath.

They are also expected to sign a bond of good behaviour and to subject themselves to the authorities in the University.

The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni reiterated UEW’s commitment to building and sustaining a global centre of excellence for teacher education in the country.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the University received a total of 38,898 applications with 37,733 going for undergraduate programmes and 1,165 for postgraduate programmes.

“The applications received represent a 90% increase over the previous year. The University offered admission to 29,459 applicants, representing an increase of 44% over the previous year. However, by close of registration, 15,171 students representing 18% over the previous year had registered.

“The Winneba and Ajumako Campuses received a total of 26,208 applications. Of this number, 25,063 applied for undergraduate programmes while the remaining 1,145 applied for postgraduate programmes. The total number of applications received represents a 76% increase over the previous year. The University offered admission to 19,105 students in Winneba and Ajumako Campuses. This also represents a 70% increase over the admissions offered in the previous year. By close of registration, however, 9,181 students had registered which represents 8% increase in registered students over the previous year,” the Vice-Chancellor noted.  

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni encouraged the matriculants to strive for excellence in all their endeavours. “It is imperative to participate in other extracurricular activities so as to make you a balanced and well-rounded person with rich experiences. Be that as it may, your primary goal here is to study, you would have to strike a fine balance between your academic, extra-curricular and social life. You should allocate a fair amount of time to be spent on studies, social engagements and rest.”

The Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq. admonished the matriculants to study the laws of UEW carefully to ensure that they are well informed on issues pertaining to the University and more importantly make their stay in the University fruitful. He entreated them to work hard and uphold the good name of the University at all times.

“As students, we expect you to utilise the various facilities and opportunities available on campus so that your stay in this University will be a blessing not only to you but also to your family and the country as a whole. It is the responsibility of all of us to help promote the image of our noble institution in a positive manner and also shape the destiny of our nation,” the Registrar said.    

The University will hold similar ceremonies at the Ajumako, Asante-Mampong and Kumasi Campuses on Thursday, 3rd and Saturday, 5th October, 2019 respectively.
