UEW Launches Silver Jubilee Celebration

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Thursday, 15th November, 2018 launched its 25th Anniversary celebration at the forecourt of Administration Block, North Campus, Winneba. 

The launch, done under the theme “Sustaining Quality Education in Ghana through Effective Teacher Education: The Role of UEW”, was spiced with colourful musical and rich cultural displays by Departments of Music and Theatre Arts.

In his Speech, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni stated that “UEW has come a long way and has made lots of progress from where it started”. He said that the University aspires to be a well recognised teacher education institution; Centre of Excellence for Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa.  

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised Management’s commitment to ensuring that students of UEW maintain excellence in academic work to become competent in their profession.  

“We have consciously and systematically expanded academic programmes which are relevant to national needs. In 2012, there were nine Faculties, two Schools and an Institute. At the time, there were 30 Academic Departments/Centres, the undergraduate programmes numbered 31.

“Currently, the Faculties have increased to 11 with 54 Departments while both Schools and Institutes remain as three each. All the Faculties run Doctoral programmes in the various Departments. We periodically review our programmes to reflect the changing needs of society.” He affirmed.  

Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni ascertained the University’s continuous stride in improving on physical infrastructure to create conducive environment for academic and administrative activities. He added that “our ICT (Information and Communication Technology) infrastructure has recently been improved and it is among the best in the public universities”.  

The Vice-Chancellor indicated that UEW had completed 14 projects recently. Among the completed projects were constructions of Registrar’s Residence, Extension to Science Block Phase 1 & 2, Faculty of Educational Studies Block, School of Creative Arts Block, Hostel Block, Staff Bungalow, Hall of Residence, Clinic for College of Agriculture Education, University Hospital, Water Project, Distance Education Study Centres amongst others.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, at the inception of UEW, staff strength was 399 out of which 140 were academic staff. “By 2012, the staff had increased to 1,706 of which 361 were academic staff. Currently, the University has full time staff strength of 2,037 comprising 515 academic and 1,522 support staff.”

“In 1992, the student population was 1,889 and currently, it is over 65,000. Our Institute for Distance and e-Learning student population is about 24,000 and our part-time / sandwich students’ number is 4,487.” Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni noted.

The Vice-Chancellor said that UEW had graduated a total of 170,623 professional teachers over its 25 years of existence.

Unveiling of the anniversary cloth and t-shirts

As part of the celebration, funds were raised during the unveiling of the anniversary cloth and t-shirts.   

The launch was climaxed with Candle Light Procession from the School of Business, South Campus to the Administration Block, North Campus, Winneba. The anniversary will be a yearlong celebration

In attendance were Management, Convocation Members, teaching and non-teaching Staff and students of the University.
