Level 300 Students of COLTEK Prepare for Industrial Attachment

A day’s orientation has been organised for level 300 students at the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) as part of preparations to embark on compulsory industrial attachment upon completion of the second semester examinations in June 2019.

Each of the students is required to do a minimum of six weeks supervised industrial attachment which is one of the key requirements for graduating from the University.

The College’s Industrial Liaison Office (ILO), which organised the orientation, underscored the shifting paradigm in tertiary education training from theories to practical experience gathering to brighten students’ chances of job placement upon graduation.

The Head, ILO, Mr. Donald Asiedu said COLTEK had deliberately designed its curriculum to include an appreciable time for industrial attachment so that students could practically equip themselves to take advantage of the limited opportunities on the job market.

He added that the orientation was therefore organized to prepare the students to approach the industrial attachment with the deserved seriousness.

Speaking on the topic “Arrangements for Industrial Attachment”, a Lecturer at COLTEK, Mr. Walter Banuenumah encouraged the students to endeavour to find well equipped and established organisations for the attachment so that they could really learn and make their efforts worthwhile.

Stressing that each of them must return from the attachment period with new skills otherwise the opportunity would have been wasted, he assured them that the College had made every necessary arrangement to enable them to have a smooth-sailing attachment experience.

A Senior Lecturer at COLTEK, Dr. Humphrey Danso, who spoke on the topic “Importance of Industrial Attachment and Assessment of Industrial Attachment”, exposed the students to potential opportunities and challenges they might encounter while on attachment.

For the opportunities, he pointed to the attaché picking life-skills including communication skills, interpersonal skills and teamwork; practical skills; opportunity to explore areas of individual interest(s); igniting of creativity, motivation and entrepreneurship; greater exposure and employment opportunities available.

While amplifying the potential for some of them to end up in organisations where there could be huge workloads or less as common challenges, he advised them to quickly adapt to such situations so they could commit to learning enough before returning to school.
