Prof. Niklas Lavesson
Professor Niklas Lavesson is a Swedish computer scientist and software engineering expert with over two decades of academic and industry-aligned research experience. He currently serves as a Full Professor at Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH), specializing in machine learning, data mining, AI ethics, and data-driven software engineering.
He has held prestigious appointments at Jönköping University and served as a Senior Advisor to the Hamrin Foundation. Prof. Lavesson has successfully led and participated in over 30 research projects with funding exceeding SEK 100 million, supported by agencies such as the Knowledge Foundation, VINNOVA, and the European Union.
His research spans energy-efficient AI, predictive modeling, software engineering processes, and real-time analytics in healthcare, defense, and education. His international collaborations include Texas A&M (USA), TU Sofia (Bulgaria), and Swedish industry partners like Saab and Ericsson.
An active academic leader, Prof. Lavesson has supervised more than 30 master’s theses and 10 doctoral students, with several earning national and European awards. He has played a key role in curriculum development, managing advanced courses in Machine Learning, Data Science, and AI Ethics, and led the design of the MSc in AI Engineering at Jönköping University.
He has served as Faculty Dean, program coordinator, and chair of educational boards, and currently holds management roles in long-term research profiles like SERT and AFAIR. As an experienced doctoral examiner and opponent, he contributes to evaluation processes across Sweden and Europe, advocating for responsible AI and sustainable technology development.
