Hon. Haruna Iddrisu – Politician, Lawyer, Minister, and Football Enthusiast

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, born September 8, 1970, and popularly known in Northern Ghana as Adun Gangdu, is a distinguished Ghanaian lawyer, seasoned politician, and passionate football enthusiast. He currently serves as the Minister for Education of the Republic of Ghana, appointed in January 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama during his second term.

A proud Dagomba from the Northern Region of Ghana, he began his education at Kulikuli School and later attended the University of Ghana, earning a B.A. (Hons) in Sociology from 1993 to 1997. During his university years, he was active in student politics and served as President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS). In 2002, he was called to the Bar and has since been a member of the Ghana Bar Association.

His political career began with his election as National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2002, a role he held for eight years. As the long-serving Member of Parliament for Tamale South since 2005, he has been re-elected six consecutive times, setting a record by running unopposed in four successive party primaries. He served as Minority Leader in Parliament from 2017 to 2023 and held various ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Communications, Minister for Trade, and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations.

Outside politics, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is a devoted family man, a Muslim, and father of three. He is a well-known football enthusiast and the owner of Karela United, a Ghana Premier League club, and Steadfast FC, a Division One club in Tamale. His club, Steadfast FC, nurtured talented winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who now plays for Leicester City in the English Premier League, with the club earning €7.9 million from a €17 million transfer deal with Sporting CP.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu is also known for his philanthropic work. In January 2020, he donated a CHPS compound to the Duunyin community in the Northern Region to support healthcare delivery. His legacy is defined by his strong leadership, legal expertise, commitment to education, passion for youth development, and enduring contributions to both politics and sports in Ghana.
