HPERS Education

The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport (HPERS) was formerly known as the School of Physical Education during the Specialist Training College (STC) in 1958. After 34 years, the institution name (STC) changed to the University College of Education when it met the Educational convention criteria, and the School of Physical Education was renamed HPERS due to the expansion in scope.

The Department’s vision is derived from its name HPERS and currently, the only institution along the West African Coast that trains and develops sport coaches leading to the award of Diploma and Bachelor of Science degree respectively. Until now, it is the leading producer of teachers, sport athletes and administrators in Physical Education and Sport in Ghana. Some coaches produced by the Department can be found in the Security Services, National Sports Authority, Sporting clubs, National teams of Ghana, Private and International Schools, Ghana Education Service, some West African countries and beyond.

The Department can boast of qualified staff with diverse backgrounds in the areas of Sport and Exercise Physiology, Sport Management, Adapted Physical Education, Curriculum and Pedagogy in PE, Socioeconomic of Sport/Sociology of Sport, Motor Learning and Pedagogy, Supervision and Adapted PE, and Sports Psychology. The majority of the teaching staff are licensed coaches in their fields of sport coaching. It is a preferred destination especially for the training of Physical Education teachers and Sport coaches in Ghana and West Africa.
