Programme Description

The goal of the MPhil Programme in Economics is to develop the human capital necessary for critical research and teaching at the tertiary levels and also train the human capital necessary for ensuring higher standards in economics.

The specific objectives are to:

train tertiary students to be able to carry out policy-relevant research related to the economic needs of developing countries and for Ghana in particular;
equip students with skills (analytical and conceptual) needed in the field of economics;
produce experts who are able to communicate complex ideas in economics to students and the general public;
assist in the extension of competencies and capacities of students in becoming professionals in the field of economics;
serve as economics education advocates and leaders in the field of economics; and
train beneficiaries of the programme in the knowledge, skills and dispositions to positively influence policy making processes in Ghana and beyond.

Entry Requirement:

To be enrolled on the programme, prospective applicants are expected to have good first degrees (at least, Second Class Lower Division) in economics or related programme of study at the tertiary level of education from recognized universities and must pass a selection interview.

Job Prospects:

The potential employers of graduates to be produced by the new programme include the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, Government agencies, Private institutions, Non-governmental organizations and community-based organizations.
