Gender Mainstreaming Directorate Organises Workshop for UEW Female Senior Members

Female senior members (Teaching and Non-teaching) of the University of Education, Winneba, have been encouraged by the Registrar to do more research and write articles in their respective areas in order to climb the academic ladder in their careers. This was said at a three-day workshop organized by the Gender Mainstreaming Directorate of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) from Tuesday 19th June, to Thursday 21st June, 2018. The workshop comprising of one male and 97 female members from the Winneba and Ajumako campuses, was held at the Registrar’s Conference Room, North Campus - Winneba.

The workshop, which was under the theme “Writing, Critiquing and Publishing a Research Article: Theory and Practice”, was aimed at helping the members learn from an experienced global academic field and share ideas and experiences in research for the progress of their professional careers. This forms part of a series of workshops and programmes held for staff of the University of Education, Winneba to create a platform of support for female senior members to climb up to the highest pinnacle of their careers.

In her Welcome Address, the Acting Director of Health Services of UEW, Dr. Beth Offei-Awuku, on behalf of the Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq. expressed her excitement on seeing a platform of that nature created for females, especially those pursuing careers in academia which provides a defense for women to combine their personal and professional lives successfully and be productive in both areas. She encouraged all female senior members; both teaching and non-teaching, especially, those in the lower ranks and those due for promotion, to engage the resource persons and participate fully in all activities. She concluded that women though multitasked and faced with a lot of challenges, should not be left at the bottom in their academic careers.

Dr. Offei-Awuku hoped that in a few years’ females, with the support of the Gender Directorate, will progress in their careers. She commended the Gender Mainstreaming Directorate for their creativity and commitment to sustain this platform, and asked that it should be extended to Senior and Junior staff with time. She also advised that programmes organised should be tailored to suit unique needs.

Resource Persons for the workshop included; Professor Ama De Graft Aikins, Professor of Social Psychology and Dean of International Programmes at the University of Ghana, Legon; Dr. Edison Pajibo, Institute of Adult Education, University of Ghana and a Research fellow at the Centre for Education Policy Studies (CEPS); and Dr. Ernestina K. Dankyi, also a research fellow at the Centre of Social Policy Studies, University of Ghana.  Two of the resource persons for the workshop, Dr. Ernestina K. The resource persons assisted the members to thoroughly critique their papers, and also made presentations on a number of research areas. This was aimed at encouraging them develop professionally, and to promote gender equity and social inclusiveness.

Professor Ama De Graft Aikins, presenting on ‘Writing and Critiquing Research Article’ explained how members can make their articles a good fit, and how they can evaluate them for credibility test. She also took them through steps in mastering literature review; definition, purpose, types and examples.

In another presentation on “Current trends in research in the Social Sciences and Humanities”, she explained some Major Global Issues such as; Poverty and Inequality, Technology, Terrorism, Global health challenges, Climate change and Environmental disasters.

Dr. Ernestina K. Dankyi, during the clinical session, took participants through the process of publishing research articles, theories and practice and what goes beyond publishing. She also talked on maximising research visibility and impact.

Dr. Edison Pajibo gave a presentation on ‘Steps in Data Presentation’, ‘Key Questions Relating to Data Collection’ and ‘Discussion of Results’. He said their data should be well presented, described and have appropriate arguments adding that it should be logical, objective and justifiable to their readers.Dr. Edison Pajibo, Research Fellow at the Centre for Education Policy Studies (UEW) during one of the sessions.

The Registrar encouraged them to take the workshop very seriously to help them improve on their research and writing skills. He also advised them to use their time profitably in their various working fields and use their skills to get them to move to the top in their respective careers.

The workshop came to a close with an open forum for comments, observations, questions and answers.
