Department of Institutional Affiliation Organises Maiden Workshop for Affiliate Institutions
The Department of Institutional Affiliation (DIA) under the Division of Academic Affairs organised a two-day training workshop for teaching and non-teaching staff of affiliate institutions from Wednesday 4th – Thursday 5th April, 2018 at the Council Chamber, North Campus.
The event had in attendance the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof Anthony Afful-Broni, Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James Kagya-Agyemang, Registrar, Surv. Paul Osei-Barima Esq, Deputy Registrar, Division of Academic Affairs, Mrs. Christie Okae-Anti and representatives from seven affiliate institutions. The institutions included: Jayee University College, University College of Management Studies (UCoMS), Advanced Business College, Data Link Institute, BlueCrest College, Entrepreneurship Training Institute (ETI) and Asanska College of Design and Technology.
There were presentations from Senior Assistant Registrar, DIA, Mr. Abeku Addokoh, Director of Quality Assurance, Prof. Yaw Ameyaw, Director (ITECPD), Dr. Dominic Danso Mensah, a Senior Lecturer, Dr. Samuel Asare Amoah, College Registrar, Mampong, Mr. Augustus K. Brew and Deputy Registrar, IDel, Mr. William Agyei-Bieni.
Dr. Dominic Mensah made the first presentation on the topics: Teaching and Learning Methods and Agent of Classroom Management. In his presentations, he said that effective teaching and learning would occur in any class as a result of successful management. He added “if we are unaware of the major agents in our work, we may not be able to deliver effectively; therefore, the starting point is self-awareness, secondly, awareness of our surroundings.”
Dr. Samuel Amoah took participants through Assessment Issues, Item Construction (Essay and Multiple Choice Questions), Developing Marking Scheme and Academic Quality Assurance. He emphasised in his presentations that lecturers should under no circumstance use Assessment as punishment for recalcitrant students.
Mr. Abeku Addokoh ended the session for the first day on Accreditation Issues. He revealed that the National Accreditation Board have had cause to impose sanctions as mandated under the law on some tertiary institutions in Ghana due to non-existence of a Governing Council, controversy over the Proprietorship of the institution, informal lease agreement for the use of the buildings occupied by the institution, admitting unqualified students during admissions and running unaccredited programmes.
Mr. Augustus Brew started the presentation for the second day with the topic, Minutes and Reports Writing. He deliberated on issues concerning Secretaries, types of Secretaries and their roles. Educating participants on Minutes and types of Minutes, he explained the five steps in Minutes writing as well as Reports, types of Reports and features of a technical Report. He said a Secretary is an Officer of a society or organisation who deals with correspondence, admits new members and organises official meetings and events. He defined Minutes as an Official written statement of the motions and resolutions of a meeting and explained a Report as being an account of a particular matter after thorough investigation or consideration by an appointed person or body.
Mr. Agyei-Bieni presented on behalf of the Registrar on the topic, Governance Structure of Universities. He said Governance was important in every University because it facilitates effective, entrepreneurial and prudent management that could deliver the long-term success of an institution.
The presentations were climaxed by Prof. Yaw Ameyaw on Academic Quality Assurance. He pointed out that Quality Assurance was needful to everybody since it entails perfection of management, lecturers, students, societies or even homes. He therefore called on everyone to exhibit good attitudes towards work. “Don’t hesitate to remind people to do the right thing when they are going wayward. When someone dumps refuse at where he or she is not supposed to do so, please prompt the person to do the right thing.” He said.
Participants thanked and commended the management of UEW as well as the organisers of the Workshop. They encouraged them to organise more of such workshops.
