Acting Vice-Chancellor and Dean of CIP Represent UEW at 2018 NAFSA Annual Conference in Philadelphia

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Afful-Broni and the Dean of the Centre for International Programmes, Prof. Yaw Sekyi-Baidoo, have represented the University at the 2018 NASFA: Association of International Educators, held in Philadelphia, from May 25 to June 02, 2018 under the theme “Diverse Voices, Shared Commitment,”.

NAFSA is the biggest forum for International Education, and the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to international education and exchange with membership and conference attendance upward of 9,000, made of attendees from many professional and geographic perspectives and backgrounds.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor attended special sessions and interactions of University Presidents and Provosts, with many prospects for international exchanges and other collaborations. The Dean, CIP however, attended the conference as a second year African Global Fellow, having won a fellowship in 2017.

The conference was an overwhelming experience with engagements in International Education with over 200 available sessions and presentations, and it offered an unparalleled opportunity of interacting with officials from universities, research institutions, funding agencies and several other groups of people involved in the provision of services and leadership in a wide range of areas in internationalisation.

In a workshop on New Internationalization Leaders on Developing Competencies for Boundary Spanning Leadership, Prof. Sekyi-Baidoo together with Dr. Stephen Appiah-Padi of Bucknell University (leader) and Dr. Khadidiatou Diallo of Gaston Berger University, Senegal presented a paper on ‘Opportunities for International Engagements in West Africa'.

Additionally, Prof. Sekyi-Baidoo had the opportunity of presenting the internationalisation plans of UEW as well as his own ideas about internationalisation in Ghana and Africa in the African Global Dialogue Forum, where he facilitated the Roundtable Discussions and the Expo Hall where he spoke about UEW to visiting delegates.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor and Dean also participated in Networking Meetings on African Internationalisation Leaders as well as the Academic Leadership Receptions where UEW was able to strike connections with scores of institutions across the globe.

As a follow up to NAFSA and UEW’s internationalisation agenda, UEW plans to host a Meeting of Internationalisation Officers in Ghana, and a Conference on Internationalisation in Ghana, to feature Internationalisation Officers, Heads of Tertiary Institutions, and the Ministry of Education and related organisations.  These programmes have been applauded by international experts and other internationalisation officers in Africa, some of whom have promised their participation.

Their participation and presentations are part of efforts to increase the visibility of UEW. The University envisages more collaborations with other universities and new engagements for the development of internationalisation in UEW.
