“UEW will employ 121 staff this year” – Acting Vice-Chancellor

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Rev. Fr. Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, has indicated that the University  has been giving the financial clearance to employ 121 staff by the close of the year 2017 to facilitate teaching and learning in the University.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor revealed that taking into account the high intake of students, more teaching and non-teaching staff are required to assist management to impact knowledge effectively and efficiently. He therefore called on the Minister of Education and other stakeholders to keep supporting UEW to positively communicate education delivery in the nation; Rev. Fr. Professor Afful-Broni said this in a speech he delivered during the 1st Session of the 22nd Congregation of UEW at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre, North Campus in Winneba.

He emphasised that the increasing number of students’ enrolment required an equal increase in staff numbers. He pointed out that 38 temporal staff (Senior Member-Teaching) had been appointed to fill vacant positions as a result of retirements, resignations and vacation of posts at the University’s four campuses.

“We are deeply grateful to the Government of Ghana for lending a great support to facilitate teaching and learning in the University by giving Financial Clearance to us to engage 121 staff by the close of the year.” He said.

He stated that the training of teaching and non-teaching staff to attain excellence continues to be the greatest concern of the University. He added that UEW had sponsored a number of senior members to pursue further studies in maintenance of its staff development drive.

“In line with our Staff Development Plan as indicated in the 2014-2018 Corporate Strategic Plan, the University granted study leave with pay to 43 members of staff to pursue doctoral, masters and other programmes in various disciplines. Out of this number, 24 are pursuing PhD; 9, masters; 7, bachelor’s degree and 3 diploma programmes. It is expected that capacities developed through the programmes will contribute gently to propelling the University in its journey into total excellence.” He noted. 

Rev. Fr. Professor Afful-Broni indicated that the Institute for Educational Development and Extension (IEDE) had given birth to the Institute for Distance and e-Learning (IDeL) and the Institute for Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development (ITECPD). He stated that it is “to improve and expand the provision of distance education services as well as Teacher Professional Development at the University and beyond.”

He said in the quest of the University to pursue a proactive administration system among its competitors, some Faculties and Institutes had been restructured. He added that the University had expanded the former Department of Business Education which used to be housed in the Faculty of Social Sciences into a School of Business at the Winneba Campus.
